7 Easy Ways to Keep an Indoor Cat Active and Happy
Share
Indoor cats are protected from traffic and other outdoor dangers, but they still have the instincts of a hunter. Without enough to do, many get bored, which can show up as overeating, night-time zoomies, scratching furniture, or knocking things off shelves. A little daily enrichment goes a long way.
1. Schedule two short play sessions a day
Ten to fifteen minutes of active play, twice a day, is a good target for most adult cats. Try playing right before meals so your cat can hunt, catch, and then eat, which mirrors their natural rhythm.
2. Let them chase something unpredictable
Cats love movement they can't predict. A feather wand teaser lets you make the "prey" dart, hide, and flutter like the real thing. End each session by letting your cat catch it, so the hunt feels finished.
3. Give them height
Cats feel safer when they can watch the room from above. A sturdy perch or a cleared shelf near a window gives them a lookout and a sunny nap spot.
4. Make scratching a good habit
Scratching is normal, healthy behavior. It stretches muscles and keeps claws in shape. Put a scratcher like the Catfidence Cat Scratcher Sofa or the Paper Park Cat Bed & Scratcher near the furniture they target, and reward them for using it.
5. Turn mealtime into a puzzle
Instead of a full bowl, hide small portions of food around the house, use a treat puzzle, or spread wet food on a lick mat. It slows down fast eaters and gives your cat a reason to explore.
6. Rotate toys every week
Cats lose interest in toys they see every day. Keep a few out and store the rest, then swap them weekly so old toys feel new again.
7. Create a cozy hideaway
Rest is part of a happy routine too. A covered bed like our Calming Pet Tent Bed gives your cat a warm, secure place to retreat after play.
When to check with your vet
Sudden changes in energy, appetite, or behavior can have medical causes. If your cat's habits change quickly, talk with your vet before assuming it's boredom.
